Allophycocyanin (APC) has an extremely high absorbtivity, a high quantum efficiency, a large Stokes shift and a strong excitation peak. The protein is commonly used for fluorescent immunolabeling, particularly in applications involving fluorescent-activated cell sorting (FACS) or TR-FRET. Cross-linking APC creates the most stable form of APC available as the αβ subunits of the APC have been crosslinked to provide increased structural integrity in the presence of chaotropic salts.
